statement

Either the spiritual or physical traces we leave behind as we pass through life is the fundamental theme that links my work. Exposed after a short time, or left hidden for centuries to be discovered by future generations, with an intrinsic narrative and a sense of both permanence and transience.

I frequently explore ideas in the grey areas between myth and fact, logic and imagination, science and art. Where science seeks a rational explanation or theory, art does not search for the truth but offers a unique idea.

I love the Minotaur as a vehicle to express what it is to be human, as a metaphor for dealing with birth, life, love and death and our own time spent on earth. This ambiguous and complex creature still has extraordinary relevence in the modern world. Incarcerated, forgotten and denied nurturing, he could only respond with violence.

My inspiration is diverse; these are a few of the things that often influence my ideas...........

Bones and skeletons, museums, archaeological or prehistoric sites and the concept of collecting and taxonomy.I love words, but I collect other people’s language rather than write my own. Moving to France and engaging with a whole new language is both liberating and incarcerating.Music, in particular RadioheadArtists such as Stanley Donwood, Picasso, Cathy de Monchaux, Goya and Film-makers Juan Pablo Etcheverry and Tim BurtonOld wallpapers, textiles, food, drink & sweet wrappers and packagingThe Brothers' Grimm, fairytale and folklore; Greek and Ancient MythologyMy own experience of the bond between mother and child.

Above all, my work is a celebration of our individuality, quirky yet life-affirming.
